Job Description

Position: Youth Advocacy Counselor

Reports to: Executive Director

The Youth Advocacy Counselor provides comprehensive direct advocacy services to youth who are primary or secondary victims of domestic abuse and/or sexual assault. Also engages in outreach and education to county schools and other youth-serving programs in the community.

Within this context, major responsibilities include:

  • Conducting thorough intake of clients, requesting services and providing referrals for services to other essential service providers as appropriate; accurately assessing immediate needs, including emergency shelter; providing crisis intervention and/or safety planning; assessing the immediate needs of any children involved. 

  • Counseling youth individually and in small groups regarding the dynamics of domestic and/or sexual violence. .

  • Collaborating with other staff on the development and implementation of activities and programs.

  • Maintaining accurate documentation, reports and statistical information as required.

  • Participating in industry-related conferences, trainings and workshops; serving on the committees of other youth-serving community organizations.

  • Developing age-appropriate abuse and violence prevention curriculum; conducting trainings in-house and through community outreach on child sexual abuse, healthy relationships, conflict resolution, bullying and diversity issues.

  • Develops and implements program evaluation tools for assessing effectiveness of programs.

  • Performing additional tasks as needed, ensuring quality service delivery to all clients.

    Minimum requirements:

  • Ability to effectively provide advocacy services, in person or by telephone, to a wide range of ethnic and cultural populations.

  • Self-directed team member.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent public speaking skills.

  • Ability to provide services unencumbered by any personal history of sexual assault or domestic violence.

  • Demonstrable proficiency in MS Office Suite and other common business applications.

  • Exhibit professionalism in the performance of all duties, including attendance and punctuality.

  • Maintain professional bearing and appearance when representing FLVF.

  • Strict adherence to FLVF’s mission, values, policies and procedures.

  • Strict adherence to all mandatory reporting laws while maintaining strict client confidentiality.

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
